Waiting platform for cyclists as a pilot project
Stopping at the traffic lights at the junction of Groß-Berliner Damm and Segelfliegerdamm in Johannisthal now more convenient
On June 1, 2026, the Department of Streets and Green Spaces installed the first waiting platform for cyclists in Treptow-Köpenick at the intersection of Groß-Berliner Damm and Segelfliegerdamm in Johannisthal (toward Adlershof). The structure, made of metal bars and a slatted board, allows cyclists to rest their feet while waiting at a red light. This is intended not only to be more comfortable for cyclists but also to improve traffic flow: cyclists do not have to dismount and can continue riding immediately when the light turns green.
The waiting platform in Johannisthal is a pilot project. The Treptow-Köpenick Borough Office would now like to know how cyclists in Treptow-Köpenick are responding to the new waiting platform. By scanning the QR code on a banner posted at the site, cyclists can take part in a short survey about the new waiting platform. Feedback on the pilot project will help the Department of Streets and Green Spaces assess whether additional installations should be set up. The survey results will then be published on the participation platform mein.Berlin.de after the cycling season in fall 2026.
Choosing a location for waiting platforms is quite a complex process. For one thing, there must be enough space for the structure, and it must not obstruct other road users. For another, the location should also have a high volume of bicycle traffic so that the waiting platform serves its purpose and is actually used.
By installing the waiting footrest, the Borough Office is also complying with a resolution passed by the Borough Assembly (BVV) (Doc. No.: VIII/1338, No.: 0947/46/21, “Waiting Footrests for Cyclists”).
Dr. Claudia Leistner, District Councilor for Urban Development, Streets, Green Spaces, and the Environment, commented: “Good cycling infrastructure is evident in the details, and that is exactly where we are focusing our efforts. The new waiting footrest makes cycling at this location a bit more comfortable and safer. In the future, cyclists waiting at a traffic light will be able to stand there comfortably without having to dismount—a small measure with a big impact on everyday cycling. That’s why I invite everyone to take part in the online survey and share their experiences. Every piece of feedback helps us make Treptow-Köpenick more bike-friendly.”
