Satellites for technological sovereignty: German Chancellor Merz and Berlin's Governing Mayor Wegner visited Adlershof-based company BST
Leading manufacturer of small satellites exemplifies Berlin's innovative strength
During his inaugural visit to Berlin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner visited BST Berlin Space Technologies at the Adlershof Technology Park to learn about the construction of small satellites. The two politicians were welcomed in Adlershof by the three managing directors of BST, Tom Segert, Matthias Buhl, and Björn Danziger, as well as by Roland Sillmann, managing director of WISTA Management GmbH, the operating company of the technology park. The Chancellor was impressed by the achievements of the company, which is making an important contribution to Germany's space security strategy with its industrial production of small satellites: “These technologies are an expression of our competitiveness and a question of our digital and technological sovereignty.”
The federal government plans to invest €35 billion in the coming years in the development of a space security architecture – for defense, innovation, and technological sovereignty. The Governing Mayor emphasized: “Berlin is strong – especially in Adlershof. This is where innovations and the future are created, ‘Made in Berlin.’”
BST was founded in 2010 by graduates of the Technical University of Berlin. It has established itself as a leading manufacturer of small satellites and aims to expand its production capacity to over 200 satellites per year. In doing so, the company is strengthening Germany's position in the global “New Space” market. BST developed into a successful technology company at the Adlershof Center for Microsystems and Materials of WISTA Management GmbH. Like many other companies from Adlershof and Berlin's future locations, BST is now contributing to Europe's technological sovereignty. WISTA Managing Director Sillmann: “It is an important sign that the German Chancellor also recognizes companies like BST. It is success stories like these that give us courage and confidence.”
