Innovation cluster for microsystemtechnology in Berlin/Brandenburg

For over twenty years, microsystem technology (MST) has been providing an essential basis for innovative products. Its success can be put down to the use of new manufacturing technologies.
As a rule, the added value stream for products extends over semiconductor technologies, MEMSs (microelectro-mechanical systems), packaging (including layup and fastener technologies), calibration and system integration. All stages along the added value stream require a large number of testing and measuring methods. The company First Sensor AG is utilising its technical and market knowhow to advance innovative approaches and map each value added stage from semiconductor manufacturer to systems production. One of our strengths is the close collaboration with innovative institutes and parts suppliers.
The sector employs 760,000. I see local networks making great contributions when they are linked on the national and international levels. Underdeveloped according to the industrial yardstick, the Berlin/Brandenburg region has evolved with technological specialities over the last twenty years. In particular Adlershof has been blessed with a centre for microsystem technology and microoptics. This is joined in the region by established, outstanding research activities at universities, colleges and institutes. The significance of microsystem technology products will grow in future.
But are we using effectively the potential our networks have to offer for our mutual benefit? This needs universal collaboration between research, politics and industry in Berlin/Brandenburg. The region is supplying excellent ideas and opportunities that must be communicated more strongly in the face of the competition from South Germany.
First Sensor AG and the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM have recognised the obvious potential for regional collaboration in MST. One new opportunity for organising the exchange of knowhow and providing political decision making aids is offered by the OPTIK Cluster Berlin/Brandenburg, which intends to concentrate specifically on MST. Also providing organisational support programmes, this cluster is represented by OpTecBB and funded by the foundation TSB Technologiestiftung Berlin und Berlin Partner. Initial activities will kick off in 2012. You’re cordially invited to join in!

Peter Krause is on the management board of First Sensor AG and Managing Director of First Sensor Technology GmbH.
