Humboldt-Universität calls for donations

Sponsorship programme for students, doctoral candidates and researchers who have fled Ukraine

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) is very concerned to make it easier for the many refugee students, doctoral candidates and researchers from Ukraine to arrive in Germany. For this reason, Humboldt-Universität has set up a sponsorship programme.

"Where possible, we want to give students and researchers security and a perspective in our academic community by taking them in and welcoming them, offering them a place to work in our labs or offices, giving them access to courses and providing them with a computer or even a transitional stipend, for example," says Prof. Dr. Peter Frensch, acting president of Humboldt-Universität.

Uncomplicated and concrete support

"That is why Humboldt-Universität has set up a sponsorship programme for refugee students and academics from Ukraine," says Frensch, "to support them in their new academic start at Humboldt-Universität. A lot can be done with on-board funds, but not everything. To help, we need your help."

The sponsorship programme is an essential part of the help and support offered by Humboldt-Universität within the framework of "Humboldt-Universität stands by Ukraine", with which HU provides uncomplicated and concrete help to refugees. This finances the costs of taking up and continuing a course of study or even continuing academic work:

  • Start-up assistance for refugee students, doctoral candidates and researchers to procure necessary technology or materials, grants for language and integration courses, counselling and workshops.
  • Semester fees for refugee students and doctoral candidates.
  • Scholarships for refugee students
  • Transitional scholarships for refugee researchers

The foundation for the sponsorship programme was laid by the quick and unbureaucratic help of the Stiftung Humboldt-Universität. The Foundation has pledged to fund semester fees for up to one hundred refugee students and doctoral candidates from Ukraine, totaling 26,000 euros.

In addition, all students enrolled this semester will receive a scholarship from Erasmus+ funds.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Schneider, Vice President for Research: "Help us to deal with the consequences of this terrible war in our eastern neighbors, encourage them and support them to continue their academic and student careers."
