Dr. Chafik Meliani
Head of the “power amplifiers” group at the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik
Chafik Meliani, born 1974 in Algeria, studied semiconductor physics for electronic devices at the University of Blida (Algeria). He received his PhD degree from the Université Denis-Diderot Paris, France. In this framework, he was working at OPTO+ (France-Telecom and Alcatel), where he was involved in further development of III-V semiconductor-based optical communication systems at higher bitrates.
Since 2003 he is with the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik in Adlershof, where he became head of the “power amplifiers” group in 2008.
His research focus
Efficiency and reconfigurability are important parameters for future communication systems, where features such as less impact on the environment and economically attractive solutions are key aspects.
Chafik Meliani and his research group at the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut are developing innovate high-frequency (HF) amplifier concepts for novel applications in mobile communications on semiconductor (based on gallium nitride) as well as on system level. These components are the basis for highly efficient and multi-functional amplifiers. One of the most advanced HF amplifier concepts is the so called class-S architecture (see image: from the semiconductor to system building blocks).
Up to now, the analogue power HF world and the digital world were separated. The target of FBH’s innovative class-S amplifiers is to use only one device for different functions and frequency bands. This concept opens up new possibilities for more compact, flexible and especially energy-efficient equipment as well as for novel architectures of communication systems.
